Headlines read, "Dow down again,"
"Little Girl Kidnapped," "1,000 Flee California wildfire," "Executives
Arrested." After mentioning a few of these, Jay Leno noted that this is
what happens when the nation no longer wants to be under God’s
protection. For a comedian to recognize this timeless truth is quite
extraordinary.
Three years ago, I was preaching the biblical message
that prosperity precedes judgment. Why? Because throughout the Old
Testament, God tried to prosper His people, but as soon as they
prospered, they turned away from Him… and, turned away from the poor,
homeless and needy.
Chapter One of the Book of Romans is a theological
synopsis of this Old Testament condition. If prosperity is the first
stage of judgment, then The United States of America may have just
passed out of that stage into the second stage. Furthermore, if the
Bible is to be our guide, things will get much, much worse until we
repent of our sins and turn back to Him.
Of course, we could avoid the coming judgment by
humbling ourselves and praying to Him immediately, and because He is
merciful and forgiving, He would quickly restore our land. As one
seminary professor said, the Old Testament is basically telling us that
we stew in the juice of our own sins, but God stands ready to forgive
and forget.
The question is: How long, O Lord, will we reject Your
love and mercy?
