In March we learned of a Christian company that specializes in accurate, high-speed translation of languages—for books and articles, for audio tracks of radio and television programs, and for instant translation of conversations over the phone.
Shortly after this development, God provided the funds (through a few special ministry friends) to make it possible for us to purchase their services so we could begin the process of organizing and now translating more than 4,000 articles, including books, television transcripts, and Bible teaching sermons, into 50 languages.
I am thrilled to report that next month all of this information will be available to you and in the languages of 88% of the world’s population—on your smart phones, iPads, and computers at JAshow.org.
Read or Listen to the Bible in 733 Languages at our Website
In addition, last month God also led us to travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to meet with the leaders of a unique ministry called Faith Comes by Hearing. We have agreed to work together on certain projects in the future. They have graciously granted us the privilege of providing the text and audio of the Bible online at our website in 733 different languages. Nearly 6 billion of the world’s 7 billion people speak one of these languages.
Can you see why it is so important to translate the Bible, TV programs, books, articles, and sermons into 50 different languages? It’s because Jesus commanded His followers to make disciples of all nations. Over the years, God has opened the door for our weekly television program to be broadcast into over 100 million American homes, and into 206 nations to a potential audience of over 2 billion people.
But statistics tell us that of the world’s 7 billion people, about 375 million speak English as their first language, another 375 million speak English as their second language, and another 750 million speak English as a foreign language. English has an official or special status in at least 75 countries with a total population of over 2 billion. So about 1 out of 4 of the world’s population speaks English at some level.
But starting next month our ministry will be able to talk directly to many who can’t speak any English, or only speak limited English. Do you have relatives, friends, or workers, who cannot speak English and would benefit from having the Bible, our TV transcripts, sermons, and other resources in their own language? Next month you can tell them they can find it all at JAshow.org.
6,000 Language Groups Still Do Not Have the Bible in Their Language
The pastor I met who leads and teaches Christians in 1,000 underground Churches in Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and Tunisia, told me that there are 9 people groups he is working with in North Africa, totaling more than 50 million people, who do not have a Bible in their own language. I immediately said we would try to help him translate the Bible into these 9 languages. I am happy to report that this is now underway. With the help of our friends who have the new technology, we hope to have the New Testament translated into these 9 languages this year!
We are also setting a goal to help those working to translate the entire Bible into the remaining 6,000 languages of the world (parts of the Bible have been translated into 2,530 languages so far). Maybe you would like to give toward helping us accomplish this goal. As you give to our ministry, we will work together with our new ministry partners to accomplish this job in the next 6 years. I really believe it’s possible! The cost is an estimated $20 million dollars to translate these remaining 6,000 languages. But if someone wrote a check for $20 million today, I could almost guarantee it would be done in the next 6 years. Imagine—none of us considered this even a possibility five months ago. God is truly opening some amazing opportunities to us.
How Can We Translate our TV Programs into the Top 10 Languages?
I would like to ask you to pray that God would provide $500,000 to translate our television programs into the world’s top 10 languages, allowing us to speak directly to 76% of the world’s people in their own language on TV. Can you think of anything more exciting than sharing the Gospel and encouraging believers in Indonesia, Egypt, or Moldova to come to faith in Christ and grow in God’s Word? If 5 people gave a gift of $100,000 each, we could be broadcasting in the top 10 languages by Christmas.
I hope that as you read this letter you will pray about how God wants you to invest in His work. There are many asking for your help. But if you will help us, I believe we can reach thousands of unsaved people around the world and provide the resources Christians in other countries need to live for Christ.
My prayer is that God will lead you to help us by giving a generous gift at the level He leads you to give. How would it feel to be responsible for helping bring the Gospel to people who have never heard it? What would it be like to help provide Bibles for one of the 6,000 remaining language groups in the world?
Thank you for your gifts in the past. Your generous donations have put us in this position to minister around the world. Also, please begin to pray for all those who will soon be able to read all of the information we will be providing at our website in 50 languages. I can hardly wait to share what God does!
Joni Eareckson Tada and Dr. Michael Easley on TV This Month
If you haven’t yet tuned in to see our new series with Dr. Michael Easley and Joni Eareckson Tada, I hope that you will, or that you will request their two series. These programs address the questions: How does God help you when you receive shockingly bad news—of life-threatening illness or a lifetime disability?
Second, we discuss how God can help you when you realize you will be living with pain and suffering for the rest of your life. Joni shares how the Lord has helped her during her 46-year battle with quadriplegia and during more recent years with breast cancer. Michael explains how God’s Word and His presence became even more real to him during his darkest moments of pain and when facing dangerous back surgeries.
Third, we discuss how God helps you when you realize you are approaching the end. How will God help us faithfully endure in those times when life is on the line and we are uncertain of the outcome?
If you or someone you know is suffering, this new series with Joni and Michael is one of the most honest, encouraging, biblical presentations you will ever hear. The three programs in this series are called “God’s Help When You Suffer.”
Our second series is called “God’s Encouragement for Caregivers.” Hear Joni’s husband Ken Tada share the emotional impact and challenges he has endured as a long-term caregiver. Learn how God helped him when he had no more strength and was depressed and ready to give up. Michael Easley’s wife, Cindy, also shares her personal account of watching the man she loved face serious physical pain. Both Ken and Cindy also share how God has sustained them as they care for their mates year after year, and how God has calmed their fears when they were not sure their spouse would live.
Someday, all of us will either be like Joni and Michael—the ones who are suffering—or we will be like Ken and Cindy, the ones caring for a loved one—a husband or wife, or one of our parents. How does God help and encourage caregivers?
