Paul the Man

Dr. Wayne Barber

“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God.” It tells us who he is, tells us what he is, and it tells us why he is what he is. Did you get all that? Who he is, what he is, and why he is what he is. We’re going to look at that first.

Paul the Missionary – Part 1

Dr. Wayne Barber

So we saw who he was: From a significant place, educated by a special person and known as a successful Pharisee. Secondly we saw what he was. What was he? “Paul, and apostle of Christ Jesus.” That word “apostle” tells us three things.

Paul the Missionary – Part 2

Dr. Wayne Barber

We’ve seen Paul the man. Last time we saw Paul the Missionary – Part 1. This time we’re going to look at Paul the Missionary – Part 2. Next time we’ll look at Paul the Missionary – Part 3. We will finish that at some point, but there’s just so much that we’re trying to look at. Who is this man called Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God?

Paul the Missionary – Part 3

Dr. Wayne Barber

We’ve looked at Paul, the Man. Now we are continuing to look at Paul, the Missionary.

Paul the Missionary – Part 4

Dr. Wayne Barber

This is the fifth message introducing this marvelous book. We are looking at the life of Paul in that first phrase Ephesians 1:1. It says, “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are at Ephesus, and who are faithful in Christ Jesus.” Turn to Acts 18 as we prepare to get into his Third Missionary Journey.

Paul the Missionary – Part 6

Dr. Wayne Barber

Ephesians is written by Paul. We know that from the first phrase of Ephesians 1:1. We’ve been spring-boarding off this first phrase which reads, “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God.” Now turn to Acts 20 as we continue to study the life of Paul and the missionary journeys of Paul. We have looked at Paul the man, and now we are looking at Paul the missionary.

Paul the Missionary – Part 7

Dr. Wayne Barber

We are looking at Paul in his third missionary journey. On his first and second missionary journeys we saw Paul as being a man surrendered. We looked into what a man who is surrendered to Christ experiences. When we got into the third missionary journey, we looked first of all at how people are blessed because someone surrenders to Christ. Remember, when you surrender to Christ, when you say “yes” to Him, at that moment you are a minister; at that moment, you are a missionary, whether across the street or around the world.

Paul the Missionary – Part 8

Dr. Wayne Barber

He’s on his third missionary journey. If you’ll look in the center of the map, you will see Asia. It should be easy to find. If you’ll look to the southwest of Asia, you’ll see Ephesus, which is a seaport city of Asia Minor. Then you see Miletus. That is where he is as we are looking at the Scripture in this study. It is a seaport city. Paul did not want to go back to Ephesus. He is on a time table. He is trying to get to Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost.

Paul the Missionary – Part 9

Dr. Wayne Barber

Really, we have looked at verses 17-24, and we have seen the integrity of his testimony; we have looked at verses 25-31, and we have seen the integrity of his burden. That was in our last study together. Now we want to look at verse 32 and look at the integrity of his message.

Paul the Missionary – Part 10

Dr. Wayne Barber

Well, we have looked at the integrity of his testimony, the integrity of his burden, and the integrity of his message. I want you to see something that I trust will bless your heart. The integrity of his desires. You know, a missionary is just someone surrendered to Jesus, whether it is across the street or around the world. Don’t ever think that just because a person has gone overseas that qualifies him to be a missionary.

Paul the Missionary – Part 11

Dr. Wayne Barber

Let me set the stage for what we are going to be talking about. As a Christian you are learning, as we all are learning, to walk in your journey with Him. How exciting and what an adventure it is. We must be willing to be led, though. God has a direction, a purpose for each of our lives. He has a direction and a purpose for churches, just like He has a direction and purpose for individual’s lives. As we are willing to be led, as we are willing to surrender to Him, then God uses us.

Paul the Messenger – Part 1

Dr. Wayne Barber

Paul had a message that he not only preached, but he had a message that he lived before others. This is what I want you to see more than anything else. His message was the message of the life-changing grace of God. By the way he lived, you see how he was definitely changed by that very message.

Paul the Messenger – Part 3

Dr. Wayne Barber

One of the things that I want to bring home to you is how difficult it must have been for Paul. All of this is going on in Jerusalem, which you could say was his home town. He was born in Tarsus, but he was raised up in Jerusalem, educated under Gamaliel, according to the Law. I mean, here is a man who once was just like the rest of the folks who were persecuting him. But God met him on the Damascus Road, changed him completely, and renewed him. Now he is in his own home town, and all these problems are being created around him.

Paul the Messenger – Part 4

Dr. Wayne Barber

It is a wonderful thing to be able to look into God’s Word, to see a man like Paul, to see from the time he is born until the time he dies and to be able to look back through his life and see the sovereign hand of God as He prepared the way and as He took care of those things in Paul’s life. God was always in control of Paul’s life.

Paul the Messenger – Part 5

Dr. Wayne Barber

There’s one more piece to this puzzle. God prepared the proclamation. What was Paul going to proclaim? What was going to come forth from him? God had already ordered the message for that hour. God has something to say to those Jews there in Jerusalem. Paul’s whole message, if you’ll notice as we go through it, is not one of the gospel of grace. Now you and I both know that was what Paul would have wanted to preach. However, the message was one of defense for his ministry to the Gentile world.

Paul the Messenger – Part 6

Dr. Wayne Barber

Let’s look at Acts 22 just to see what God has to say to us. We left Paul in a pretty precarious position last time. He has been arrested. The people in the Temple have turned against him, and now the Roman centurion and his soldiers have taken him to the barracks where they are going to question him.

Paul the Messenger – Part 7

Dr. Wayne Barber

We find Paul in another precarious predicament in this study. He’s always in trouble. If you want to find Paul in the New Testament, find the local jail or find a riot somewhere. Paul is usually right in the middle of it. He’s a servant of the Lord Jesus Christ and because of that, a lot of persecution comes his way.

Paul the Messenger – Part 8

Dr. Wayne Barber

In our last study we saw how Paul was blessed by being led of God. Having been called, he is now enjoying being led and protected by God. When a man is called by God to do a task assigned by God, he’s absolutely totally invincible until God is through with Him. Nobody can stop him. They can hurt him. They can hinder him, but they cannot stop him until God is through with him. Paul died a martyrs death. I am not saying you won’t die a terrible death. However, until God is through with us and the task He has assigned to us, we are invincible as long as we are surrendered to Him.

Paul the Messenger – Part 10

Dr. Wayne Barber

The doctrine of the sovereignty of God, to me, is the most comforting doctrine in scripture. To know that He is on the throne and to know that He is in control is comforting. We are seeing this in the life of Paul. If we have ever seen it anywhere, we are seeing it in the life of Paul. We are going to take a large portion of Scripture this time.

Paul the Messenger – Part 11

Dr. Wayne Barber

Paul has been left in prison for two years, and not one single charge has been leveled against him. Now this is against all Roman law. However, they do it. The Jews want Paul convicted and subsequently put to death, but they cannot support any charges against him. What is God doing? Why is He allowing him to be in prison for two years with no charge leveled against him?

Paul the Messenger – Part 12

Dr. Wayne Barber

We saw last time that Agrippa wants to hear from Paul. He is going to get his chance. Paul is going to have an opportunity to share his witness before King Herod Agrippa II.

Paul the Messenger – Part 13

Dr. Wayne Barber

Well, in this study we are going to see from the life of Paul that he shares his testimony, and it is literally thrown right back in his face. The key is not in the rejection of the testimony. I think the key and the focus is the attitude Paul had once he realized his testimony had been rejected. That’s the key. When Jesus is Jesus in you and Jesus is Jesus in me, His burden in us will not allow us to do anything but press on.

Paul the Messenger – Part 14

Dr. Wayne Barber

There are four things I want you to be challenged by. Now, you can’t make a formula out of Paul’s life. That’s not what I am doing. You know that. However, there are four principles here that may come to help you somewhere down the road in this great adventure of saying “yes” to Jesus.

Paul the Messenger – Part 15

Dr. Wayne Barber

Paul is a focused man, a changed man, and a single-minded man. We began to look at him as a man, a missionary and now as a messenger. As he faced the future, what could he expect God to do in his life? I want us to think on those things. If we are as focused and single-minded like he was, then we can cling to that which God will do now in our life just as He did in his life. But remember this, you must be willing to obey Him and trust Him. This is the way God honored a man. He was faithful to a man who had chosen, in God’s power, to be faithful to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul the Messenger – Part 16

Dr. Wayne Barber

We are going to be looking at verses 11-31, the end of the chapter. Paul is now on the last leg of his journey to Rome. It has been packed with adventure.

Paul the Model – Part 1

Dr. Wayne Barber

We are finishing up the life of Paul. We have been following him from Acts 9 all the way through to Acts 28. What are we doing? We are introducing the book of Ephesians. We are about now ready to enter into the study of the book of Ephesians. I hope you have a better idea and better understanding of the author of Ephesians. Obviously the Holy Spirit was the main author, but Paul was the vessel He chose to use to write the wonderful epistle of the book of Ephesians.

Paul the Model – Part 2

Dr. Wayne Barber

I know you and I struggle, but it is wonderful to know that there were others who had to struggle to be used of the Lord. Why do we struggle? Because the very moment we are saved, our flesh becomes a real detriment to us. It works against the Spirit. Of course, the devil and his demons are out there trying to enhance the whole picture. There is a war that is going on. They struggled, but they learned somehow in that struggle to trust God and to let God use them in a powerful way. The apostle Paul was one of those men.
