What is God Like? – Part 2

I’m sure you have heard people say that “God is love.” The Bible tells us that God loves – loves His people – in a way that we can’t really imagine. The Bible says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

Why would God send His Son? When Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, they broke the very special relationship God had with His people. They “died” to Him in a way. Just like when you break the law, or when you disobey your parents, there must be a punishment, God also had warned them that if they disobeyed they would die.

But God loved them so much that He decided that Jesus would die in Adam and Eve’s place. He died so they would be able to live for ever in heaven with God.

But why couldn’t God just say, “Oh, well. Boys will be boys. I’ll just ignore what they did”? That’s because He is also holy. And God’s holiness means He cannot be associated with evil or sin. The punishment must be paid. Otherwise the one who sinned could never live with God.

The same gift is offered to you. When Jesus died on the cross, He also paid for YOUR sins. All you have to do is reach out to God and ask Him to let you take part in that gift. In that way you can satisfy God’s holiness, and experience His love.
