Redeeming Big Hollywood

Vice Presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman has, in the past, supported efforts to clean up the entertainment industry. Dr. Baehr contrasts that stand with some of his other positions, and asks whether or not he will continue to stand against such corruption.

Redeeming Big Hollywood:
Episode I: A New Hope How Will Lieberman Use His Lightsaber Now?

Vice President Al Gore has made a great choice in Senator Joseph Lieberman. Senator Lieberman has been a consistent friend of MOVIEGUIDE® and the work of the Christian Film and Television Commission. In fact, I have shared the platform with Senator Lieberman in expressing our concerns about the entertainment industry.

Once upon a time, in the 1980s of the Reagan Era, Tipper Gore, the wife of Democratic presidential contender All Gore, was a great advocate for redeeming the music industry. To his credit, Tipper’s husband strongly supported her. Then the pressure, and the money, from Big Hollywood, and their sycophants in government, journalism and academia, became too great, so both the Gores backed off from their courageous stand.

Hopefully, the addition of Senator Lieberman will revive Mr. Gore’s interest in redeeming the values of the mass media of entertainment. If both mainstream Democrats and mainstream Republicans, especially those like Tipper and Al who say Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior, and religious Jews like Senator Lieberman link arms with MOVIEGUIDE®’s carefully thought-out plans to redeem Big Hollywood, we can make a much greater impact on America and the whole world.

Such things take time, money and effort, of course. Therefore, every Christian and every person of the Jewish faith should ask themselves, What are we doing to help stem the corruption that has so powerfully seeped into our culture, our lives and the lives of our children?

I must give one word of warning, however. Questions have arisen whether, like Tipper and Al, Senator Lieberman really understands all the moral issues facing this great nation and the rest of the world. For example, his radically extremist “pro-choice” position on abortion and partial birth infanticide strongly contradicts the man’s stated religious faith. Also, his support of the National Endowment for the Arts, which takes taxpayer monies to fund anti-Christian, graphically homosexual and even pornographic art, is almost equally disturbing. Could these atrocious positions, coupled with the fundraising juggernaut of the Democratic Party and Big Hollywood, affect Senator Lieberman’s current position on curbing sex, violence and anti-religious bigotry in the mass media of entertainment? Only God knows if Mr. Lieberman is a Luke Skywalker, a Darth Vader or a Senator Palpatine.

Whomever he turns out to be, however, Christians must be aware of the following. In the political realm, and even the spiritual, you must be careful with whom you get into bed. For you just may discover that, in the morning, your bedfellow has stabbed you in the back. Or, worse, has seduced you to stray from God and His Holy Word. These things have happened time and time again to evangelically-minded Christians who have had the courage, but not always the proper discernment, to step into the political arena. As Scripture says, we always must be wise as serpents but harmless as doves.
