The Facts on Psychic Readings (Harvest House, 1997), p. 18

How does the “scientific” discipline of parapsychology show that psychics and mediums belong in the same category?

Parapsychology, or psychical research, is the “scientific” study of what is called “psi,” a term that refers to psychic events and abilities and/or the energy through which they are accomplished. In modern parapsychology, “psi” is often viewed as either a “new discovery” or as evidence of man’s sudden “evolving” to a supposedly higher level—an evolutionary “mutation in consciousness”—allegedly demonstrated through man’s ability to perform psychically. Louisa Rhine, wife of the well-known father of modern parapsychology, J. B. Rhine, reflects the scientific, “new discovery” approach when she writes, “One of the most significant advances of science is the discovery that psychic or psi ability is real.”* David Hammond, author and co-publisher of Psychic Magazine (now New Realities), reflects the evolutionary view: “What seems clear is that a giant leap forward in human evolution is being taken now. Evolution of the mind, along with the emergence of a psychic sense, has begun.”*

As noted, parapsychology holds to a basic premise concerning psychic abilities. It assumes that the psychic powers it studies reflect genuinely human potential—latent powers of the mind that anyone can unfold and learn to develop. A standard resource, the Handbook of Parapsychology, reflects such a view, referring to psychic powers as “potentialities of the race,” “latent human possibility,” and “slumbering abilities within the self.”*
